It connects to a length of about 290 km the city of Cincinnati on the Ohio River in the south with Lake Erie in the north. Side channels connect with Defiance at Wabash and Grand Lake St. Marys. Individual Structures of the channel were added to the National Register of Historic Places, including the Lockington Locks.

The construction of the canal was decided in 1825 by the Parliament of Ohio. The construction lasted from 1825 to 1845. After a flood in 1913 destroyed parts, the channel 1929 officially abandoned.
