Michael Cimino
Michael Cimino (* probably on February 3, 1939 in New York) is an American film director.
Life and work
Cimino first studied art and architecture at Yale University. He discovered his interest in the theater and learned the government work at the Actors Studio. He then turned commercials and documentaries. This was followed by screenplays for several films, including Dirty Harry II
In 1974, he directed her first for a movie. With The Deer Hunter ( The Deer Hunter, 1978) he succeeded to a large-scale epic about soldiers in the Vietnam War and her damaged life after her return to the United States a great success. The film won awards including five Academy Awards, including that for Best Director. Cimino believed with his next major project to be able to connect to this success. The late Western Heaven's Gate in 1980 but was due entirely coated production costs, devastating reviews and a disappointing Box office results for hitherto the greatest economic failure of film history and led to the Transamerica Corporation sold the producing studio United Artists to MGM. 2012 was awarded the Director's Cut - with 218 minutes much shorter than the 5 -hour original - the honorary Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Cimino had afterwards in the financing of other projects in Hollywood great difficulty; all already planned films with United Artists were deleted. Five years after his defeat Cimino was the Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis for his thriller win Year of the Dragon. The screenplay he co-authored with Oliver Stone. The film was received very differently. Part of the U.S. film critics and moviegoers could Cimino recover for itself, but commercial success was not granted this strip. The subsequent films failed to match the success of The Deer Hunter also. In 2008, it was announced that Cimino is working on a film adaptation of the novel by André Malraux Thus man lives.
