Michael Fitzgerald (psychiatrist)

Michael Fitzgerald ( born October 7, 1946) is an Irish psychiatrist and university lecturer.

Life

Michael Fitzgerald studied at the Chicago Medical School in the U.S.. In 1970, he worked as a junior doctor at St. Patrick 's Hospital in Dublin. This was followed by appointments at Bethlehem Royal and Maudsley Hospital London and at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases. In 1979 he became senior registrar at the Psychiatry Kings 's College Hospital, London. Next he worked as a psychiatrist at the National Children's Hospital Dublin. He was appointed the first Professor of Child Psychiatry in Ireland at Trinity College in Dublin in 1996. He is a scientific advisor to the Irish Society for Autism.

During his career, Fitzgerald has more than 1900 people are diagnosed with autism or Asperger syndrome. As an author or co- author, he has published 16 books. For more notoriety he achieved with his investigations on the relationship between autism and creativity, which he in his books Genesis of Artistic Creativity - published Asperger 's Syndrome and the Arts and Autism and Creativity. Simon Baron -Cohen described the latter as the best book that he had read about autism.
