Research

The focus of Fritsch's research is in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation, whereby it focuses its attention on the analysis of the employment effects of new firms. Together with David B. Audretsch, he developed the conceptual model of regional growth regime, which classifies regions according to the level of their regional birth rate and its employment growth. In the area of innovation research he focuses on regional innovation systems, the division of innovative labor between the actors and the efficiency of innovation. Furthermore, Fritsch was instrumental in highlighting the importance of universities in regional innovation systems and the innovative activities of private companies.

His study of the relationship between cultural amenities and economic growth of a region attracted in the media considerable attention. It succeeded Fritsch and his co-authors show that regional growth is 2 percent higher in those regions of Germany, where in 1800 was an opera house than in regions without the Opera House. This should be food for thought for policy makers, whether it's really worth to save expenditure for cultural purposes. About this result reported, among other things, the New York Times.
