Michael Garicoits

Michael Garicoits ( fr.: Michel Garicoits ) ( born April 15, 1797 in Ibarre, Basque Country (France), † May 14 1863 in Bétharram department Pyrénées -Atlantiques ) was a Catholic priest and founder and first Superior of the cooperative, the priest the Sacred heart of Jesus of Betharram a pioneer of Christian school education. He was canonized by the Catholic Church.

Life

The son of a small farmer was ordained in Bayonne on December 20th to the priest. In 1825 he was appointed rundown seminary of Betharram as an economist and professor of theology and 1831 the rain. After the seminary was moved to Bayonne, he remained in Bétharram as priest of a pilgrimage church. Later, he became director of the pilgrimage. He was chaplain to the " cross Daughters" ( Congregation of the Filles de la Croix, also known as " Andrew Sisters" ) and its founder, St.. Johanna Elisabeth Bichier of age. This crucial supported his plan to found a priest Association, which should support the Christian education. The local bishop approved the project and in 1835 he founded with five priests an institution that in 1841 the final name Societas Sacratissimi Cordis Jesus - took Bétharram (SJC ) ( Association of the priest of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Betharram ).

The priests association spread rapidly in the southwest of France and later in South America, particularly in Argentina and Uruguay.

Michale Garicoits was born on March 15, 1923 by Pope Pius XI. beatified and on July 6, 1947, Pope Pius XII. canonized. His feast day is May 14
