Michael Joseph Hoeppner received on 29 June 1975, the ordination to the priesthood for the Diocese of Winona.

Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him on 28 September 2007 as Bishop of Crookston. The Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Joesph Harry Flynn, donated to him on November 30th of the same year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were his predecessor Victor Hermann Balke and Bernard Joseph Harrington, Bishop of Winona.
