Michael Neher

Michael Neher ( born March 31, 1798 in Munich, † December 4, 1876 ) was a German painter of the Biedermeier period.

Life

Neher was the son of the painter Bernhard Neher Elder. from Biberach an der Riss. From 1813, he attended for three years, the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown and was a pupil of the court painter and Matthias Klotz and genre painter Angelo Quaglio the Elder ( 1778-1815 ) there. After his training Neher went to Italy in 1819 and remained there until 1825. The last two years he spent in Rome, where he specially devoted himself to architectural painting in the studio of the painter Heinrich Maria von Hess.

In 1825 he returned to Munich and settled as a freelance artist. As a typical representative of the Biedermeier Neher created many costume pieces and landscapes. With its views of public places as well as architectural representations from many Bavarian towns he also made ​​a name for himself.

In Hohenschwangau Castle Neher designed the " Hall of the Swan Knight " with works in the style of Peter Paul Rubens and "Heroes Hall" by Moritz von Schwind's compositions. In his late work Neher moved almost entirely on the architectural painting. The whole range of masterpieces of German architecture, he designed and lovingly he is because of its level of detail still known today.

At the age of 78 years Michael Neher died on December 4, 1876 in Munich.
