Michael of Chernigov

Mikhail of Chernigov or Mikhail Wsewoloditsch (Russian: Михаил Всеволодович, Mikhail Vsyevolodovitch, Михаил Черниговский, Mikhail Chernigovskiy; * 1185, † September 20th 1246 in Sarai ) is today revered in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as a saint. His feast day is 20 September.

He was prince of Perejaslawl ( 1206), Prince of Novhorod - Seversky ( 1219-1226 ), Prince of Chernigov ( 1223-1235, 1242-1246 ), Prince of Novgorod ( 1225-1226 ), Prince of Halych ( 1235-1236 ) and finally, Grand Prince of Kiev (1236-1240, 1240, 1241-1243 ).

Childhood

He was the only son of the future today known Grand Prince Vsevolod IV of Kiev and of Anastasia, a daughter of the Polish Duke Casimir II

End of life

With the arrival of the Mongols in 1239, he was the powerful Grand Prince of Kiev. He died as a martyr in the Central Asian Sarai.
