Michael Walsh (author)

Michael Walsh ( born 1949 in Jacksonville, North Carolina) is an American music critic and writer.

Life

After studying musicology Walsh worked since 1972 as a reporter for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. In 1977 he was music critic of the San Francisco Examiner, and 1981-97 for Time Magazine.

His books include Carnegie Hall: The First One Hundred Years ( 1987), Who's Afraid of Classical Music (1989 ), Andrew Lloyd Webber: His Life and Works (1989, revised 1997 ) and Who's Afraid of Opera? (1994). He wrote the novels Exchange Alley (1997), As Time Goes By ( novel sequence for the film Casablanca (1942 ), 1998 ) and And All the Saints ( 2003).

Today he is a professor of journalism at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.
