Michal Ajvaz

Michal Ajvaz (born 30 October 1949 in Prague) is a Czech prose writer, poet, essayist and translator.

Life

1967 to 1974 he studied at the Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University in Prague Bohemistics and aesthetics, worked until 1994 as a janitor, guards and workers in the waterworks, then from 1996 to 1999 as editor of the Literární noviny ( Literary Gazette ). In 1994, he became self-employed as a writer, journalist and publicist. Since 2003 he is an employee at the Center for Theoretical Studies at the Academy of Sciences and Charles University. His poems, stories, novels, essays and theoretical studies he has published since 1989.

The philosophical and aesthetic creative writer builds on each individual passages of narrative in his lyrics. Ajvaz ' philosophical digressions linguistic and literary models, his mysterious walks - all of which is aligned in principle on a goal: While purging the absolute confidence in the human capacity for the world and the ideas of our surroundings and to know ourselves.

His debut album "Murder at the Intercontinental Hotel " (1989) characterizes the quest for a holistic, creative philosophical and artistic statement. Handlungsort his novels, Prague is steeped in magical visions, grotesque and supernatural scenarios.
