Michel-Joseph Gebauer

Michel Joseph Gebauer (* 1763 in La Fere, Aisne, † December 1812 in Russia) was a French composer and oboist.

Life and work

Michel Joseph Gebauer was the son of a product originating in Germany military musician. He was the eldest of four brothers François René Gebauer (1773-1845), Pierre- Paul Gebauer and Etienne -François Gebauer, all played music, composed and performed together in a quartet.

He received his first music lessons from his father and instrumental. The age of 14 he entered the chapel of the Garde suisse in Versailles as an oboist. In 1790 he joined as an oboist in the orchestra of the Musique de la garde nationale de Paris. From 1795 to 1802 he was professor at the Conservatoire de Paris. After that, he became music master of the guard of the first consul and later the Imperial Guard. He understood it sent to join the by Jean Paul Egide Martini introduced in France German taste with the French, as he was portrayed by François -Joseph Gossec and Charles -Simon Catel. His military marches were highly appreciated.
