MichÃ¨l Yost

Michel Yost (* 1754, † July 5, 1786 ) was a French clarinet virtuoso and composer. He is considered one of the founders of the French school of clarinet playing and was known during his lifetime beyond the borders of France.

Life

Originally oboist he studied the clarinet by Johann Joseph Beer, gave his first concert as a soloist in 1777 and was, until his death in 1786 under the famous clarinetist of France. As a composer, he created 14 clarinet concertos and chamber music ( duos, trios, and quartets for clarinet and Airs ). Although most of the compositions were published under his name, a number of which are the result of a collaboration with other musicians such as Johann Christoph Vogel.

Yost was also active as a teacher, his most famous student was Jean -Xavier Lefèvre.
