Johann Vogel (composer)

Johann Christoph Vogel ( baptized March 18, 1756 in Nuremberg, † June 28, 1788 in Paris) was a German composer.

Life and work

Johann Christoph Vogel was the son of luthier Michael Vogel and grandfather of the French composer Charles -Louis -Adolphe Vogel ( 1808-1892 ). Johann Christoph Vogel first teacher was George William Gruber. At the age of 17 years was a member of the bird Thurn and Taxis in Regensburg court orchestra and student of Joseph Riepel. Three years later he went to Paris as a horn player in the court orchestra of the Duke of Montmorency, and later he was active as a chamber musician to the Duke of Valentinois. The compositions from this period are clearly in the successor Christoph Willibald Gluck.

In cooperation with the horn player Johann Wenzel Stich and clarinetist Michel Yost, a number of quartets for woodwinds and strings, a clarinet concerto and a bassoon concerto was written. Bird composed several symphonies, concertante symphonies and violin and flute concertos.

Bird emancipated himself from his great idol Gluck with the opera La Toison d'Or ( " The Golden Fleece " ), which was premiered in 1786.
