Michelham Priory

Me Priory is the site of a former Augustinian priory near Upper Dicker, East Sussex, England, United Kingdom. It belongs to the Sussex Archaeological Society.

History

The Augustine Priory of the Holt Trinity in Michelham was founded in 1229. The priory was dissolved in 1537 by Henry VII. The church and some of the buildings were torn down and 1599-1601 the house to Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset was sold. Some three hundred years later, in 1896 it was bought by James Gwynne, his children Rupert, Roland and Violet raised them here. The property remained until the 20th century, private property, when it was renovated by the architect and antiquarian, Walter Godfrey. In the winter of 1941-42 it was used by Canadian troops as a base, as they were preparing for Operation Jubilee. The headquarters of the Auxiliary Territorial Later it was housed service for East Sussex.

The estate was founded in 1958 by Mrs. R. H. Bought Hotblack which it acquired for the purpose of preserving for posterity. Based on a foundation of Kenneth James William Mackay, 3rd Earl of Inchcape in memory of his friend John Fletcher Boughey, who had fallen in World War II, Hotblack overwrote the property on November 1, 1959 the Sussex Archaeological Society as a trustee.
