Michelin Challenge Bibendum

The Challenge Bibendum is launched by Michelin event, held annually since 1998. On the Michelin Challenge Bibendum technical solutions and concepts for sustainable mobility will be presented on the road. The aim of the event is to reduce the energy consumption of vehicles to minimize CO2 emissions to secure the energy supply for road transport to reduce the noise, to reduce the number of accidents and improve traffic flow. The Challenge Bibendum is a non- profit event and is organized by the French tire manufacturer Michelin.

History

On the 100th anniversary of the Michelin mascot " Bibendum " Edouard Michelin founded the Challenge Bibendum. The inaugural event took place in 1998 in Clermont- Ferrand, the headquarters of Michelin, instead. In the following years, the event has also appeared in Los Angeles (2001 ), Heidelberg (2002 ), San Francisco ( 2003), Shanghai ( 2004 and 2007), Kyoto (2005 ), Paris (2006 ), Rio de Janeiro (2010) and most recently in Berlin ( 2011). The participating experts are from vehicle manufacturers and the automotive supply industry, energy suppliers and research institutions. There are also representatives from politics and business.

On the multi-day event, the experts approaches, strategies and solutions to present to promote environmentally friendly vehicles, alternative drive solutions and future transport concepts. In addition, the Challenge Bibendum is understood as a platform for mutual exchange: in panels, conferences and workshops to discuss the automotive actors with decision-makers from politics, business and science and media representatives opportunities for sustainable road mobility. An integral part is also an extensive field test in the form of an environmental rally for the vehicles presented. On this vehicle parade with around 200 vehicles cars, buses, trucks and city vehicles must prove their practicality and performance under real conditions. This includes braking and acceleration tests and the measurement of energy consumption and noise. The vehicles with the lowest energy consumption to receive a special award.

Challenge Bibendum in Berlin from 18 to 22 May 2011

Scene of the Challenge Bibendum 2011 was the site of the former airport Tempelhof in Berlin. The focus was on the issue of " clean, safe and networks ". Central issues devoted to the fields of energy and drive concepts, road safety and the linking of all road users through so-called Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
