Michelle of Valois

Michelle de Valois (* January 11, 1395 in Paris, † July 8, 1422 in Ghent ), also known as Michelle de France, was a French princess of the House of Valois and by marriage Duchess of Burgundy.

Life

Michelle was a daughter of King Charles VI. of France (1380-1422) and his wife Isabeau de Bavaria, daughter of Duke Stephan III. of Bavaria- Ingolstadt. King Charles VII of France ( * 1403, 1422-1461 ) was her brother. First marriage negotiations were led by the brother of the queen, Ludwig of Bavaria, who was stopped by the hand of Michelle, but rejected for Johann, son of the Roman-German King Ruprecht.

In June of 1409, she married in Paris, Count Philip of Charolais, 1419 his father John the Fearless under the name of Philip III. the Good Duke of Burgundy followed. At the same time married Michelle's brother Louis, at that time the French heir to the throne, a sister of Philip the Good. The double wedding had already been sealed in 1404 by Queen Isabeau and Duke John the Fearless and should deepen the alliance between Isabeau and Johann. As dowry Michelle received the cities Peronne, Roye and Montdidier, who remained in possession of Burgundy, even after her death.

At the request of the local stalls Michelle moved in 1413 with her husband in the County of Flanders. From 1419 transferred its Philipp as its representative government affairs in Flanders and Artois. Michelle has been described as gentle, she tried a moderating influence on her mother and was truly loved by her husband. She died before the age of 27 after a short illness, allegedly poisoned by an Italian maid of honor on behalf of Isabeau. Michelle was buried in the St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent.
