Michipicoten Island

Michipicoten Iceland is an island in the northeastern part of Lake Superior. It belongs to the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada.

It is located 175 km northwest of Sault Ste. Marie and 65 km south-west of Wawa.

The third largest island in Lake Superior is 27 km long and up to 10 km wide. The island is uninhabited.

On Michipicoten Iceland there are large populations of beaver, woodland caribou and birds. You goal of adventure kayakers. The closest distance to the mainland Ontario is 16 km. The entire island is located in the Michipicoten Iceland Provincial Park, which is managed by Ontario Parks.

Michipicoten Iceland consists of old lava rock, which resulted from volcanism of the Midcontinent Rift system. It is heavily wooded with several lakes.

In 1912 a lighthouse was built on the eastern tip of the island.

On old maps the island " Isle Maurepas " was - according to the French Minister of Marine Jean -Frédéric Phelypeaux, comte de Maurepas - called.
