Microfiber

Microfiber ( in the literature also Microfibre) is a collective term for fibers whose fineness is less than 1 dtex, ie weigh 10 000 m of such a microfiber maximum 1 g main focus of the fineness of microfibers is between 0.3 to 0.8 dtex. Comparatively to the fineness of the natural fibers cotton from 1.5 to 2.5 dtex, new wool 3 to 6 dtex and 1.3 dtex silk. The fiber diameters are then a function of the density from 3 to 10 microns. The normal human hair of the head has a diameter between 50 and 70 microns. Glass fibers and other mineral fibers are microfibers as referred to when the diameter is less than 3 microns .. finer fibers ( less than 0.3 dtex ), are usually referred to as a super or ultra-fine microfibers fibers

Microfiber fabrics are exceptionally soft and resistant to deformation. In clothing made of microfiber normally find a label with an indication of microfiber, such as " 100 % polyester microfiber ." Microfibers can be made from synthetic or natural materials. Many manufacturers use their own trademarks to describe their synthetic fibers. A few examples:

  • Polyester Trevira Finesse, diols ® Soft, Fortrel Microspun, DuPont Micromattique, Prima Belle, Shingosen
  • Nylon: Timbrelle ®, Supplex Microfiber Tactel ® Micro, Silky Touch
  • Acrylic: Micro Supreme
  • Cellulose: Lyocell

Because microfibers are so fine, many of them can be packed tightly together. There are much more fine fibers required to produce a yarn, resulting in a larger fiber surface. Microfiber fabrics are very resistant to lint.

This results in special fields of application:

  • Imitation leather such as Alcantara for the production of mantle materials, gloves or fabrics for upholstered furniture.
  • Functional outerwear ( sports and rainwear ) of polyester or polyamide with the properties such as permeability to water vapor (sweat evaporates through the fabric pores), fast drying, wind-proof, water-resistant along with a soft touch.
  • High performance cleaning cloths that require no or only small amounts of cleaning agent in use. For details see microfiber cloth.
  • Silk -like fabrics for outerwear items or linens.
