Middle Andaman Island

Central Andaman or English. Middle Andaman Iceland is the largest of the three main islands of the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean. Politically, the island is part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Geography

Middle Andaman Iceland is located in the center of the archipelago, between North Andaman Iceland and Baratang from which it is separated only by a respective a few hundred meters wide strait. Middle Andaman Iceland is 68 km long, up to 31 km wide and has an area of nearly 1536 km ², making it the largest island in both the Andaman and all of India. The island reaches near the eastern coast in Mount Diavolo a height of 512 meters. Largest city on the island is Rangat. Other important towns are Mayabunder, cheap Round, Kadamtala, Bakultata and Betapur. The state of the 2001 census the island had a total of 54 385 inhabitants.

Population

On the West Coast Middle Andamans still live a few hundred Jarawa, an indigenous ethnic group of the Andaman Islands who speak a language called Jarawa also from the group of Andamanese languages. From also indigenous people of the Great Andamanese, for example, the Bo, nowadays no one lives on Middle Andaman. Therefore, the vast majority of the population are mostly from the Indian mainland immigrant ethnic groups and their descendants.
