Miguel Nicolelis

Miguel Angelo Laporta Nicolelis (* 1961 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian physician and neuroscientist.

In 1984 he received his doctorate at the University of São Paulo for Dr. med; In 1989, he made ​​an additional Ph.D. at the Institute of Biomedical Science. He then worked as a postdoc at Hahnemann University. 1994, he became assistant professor at Duke University, where he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 2001 to full professor in 1998. In 2009 he was awarded the Neuronal Plasticity Prize.

In January 2011 he was appointed Pope Benedict XVI. as an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
