Mihály Székely

Mihály Székely ( born May 8, 1901 in Jászberény, † March 22, 1963 in Budapest) was a Hungarian opera singer ( bass).

Life

Székely ungarisierte its name from Spagatner in Székely. After private studies followed first stage performances as a singer at the Budapest Orpheum. At the age of 22 years he was engaged, the Budapest State Opera. Here, he was 40 years, with over 1300 performances. Even abroad, he made ​​appearances in Vienna and in Italy.

During the persecution of the Jews, a priest hid it with you. After the Second World War, his friend Antal Doráti wanted to bring him to Dallas. In the United States, he received a contract on the New York Metropolitan Opera, where he was from 1947 to 1950 in Wagner roles ( Fafner, Landgrave Hermann, King Marke, Hunding ) 47 ideas.

In the same years he reached under Klemperer a highlight of his career in the Budapest Opera House. In 1950 his career was interrupted by a foreign travel ban. In 1956 he was able to travel to the west again. He appeared in Holland and at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

Székely died in 1963 during an operation three days after his last performance. A monument is located on the Budapest cemetery where he is buried.
