Mike McDermott (athlete)

Michael J. McDermott ( born January 18, 1893 in Chicago, † October 19, 1970 ) was an American swimmer and water polo player.

Career

McDermott was 1910-1918 nine times in a row U.S. indoor champion in the breaststroke. In total he won during his career 32 national championship titles in swimming and water polo. He was also a two -time Olympian. At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, he took up about 200 meter breaststroke and 400 meter breaststroke, but was disqualified in both competitions in the heats. Eight years later, at the Summer Games in Antwerp, he drew on these two routes into the semi-finals. In these games, he was also a member of the U.S. water polo national team, which finished fourth. McDermott came in two games for use.

After the end of his sports career, he was also financially successful as a general contractor in the Chicago area. In 1959, he was Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Pan American Games, which were held in his hometown of Chicago.

In 1969 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
