Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211

The Soviet fighter aircraft Mikoyan -Gurevich I- 211 (Russian Микоян - Гуревич И -211, also: The project ) was a development of the MiG -3 and should replace this. However, despite good performances they did not go into mass production in favor of the Lavochkin La -5.

Development

First construction works on the project I- 211 took place in 1941. It was M -82 tested (renamed ASch -82 later) and fitted to the end of the same year by the pilots I. G. Lazarev and W. I. Golofastow a cell of the MiG- 3 with the radial engine. As armament served three 12.7 -mm machine guns UBS. But this as I- 210 or MiG -9 M -82 machine designated revealed no particular improvement in performance over its predecessor and the draft was revised again.

The tail was enlarged and the model refined aerodynamically through the accommodation of the cooler in the aircraft interior. The hull cross section was more suited to the engine and enlarged.

In the summer of 1942, test pilot W. M. Sawkin began flight testing. In the further course of the test, it was found that the I -211 at its top speed and climb performance was the best thing that the Soviet aircraft industry had to offer at this time. She excelled in these properties even at this time, newly developed high-performance parallel designs La -5 and Yak- ninth

It was decided to build a preliminary series of ten machines and test at the front. The I -211 were used in the Kalinin section, earning positive reviews. Since the new models were La -5 and Yak- 9, however, already built in large masses, and an introduction of the I- 211 would have a means at this time of war unacceptable loss of time in production, the model is not ultimately filed for series.
