History

Due to a specification issued in 1948, the Lavochkin design offices, Sukhoi and Mikoyan -Gurevich began developing each one all-weather jet fighter for air defense, and then the types of La -200, were developed Su -15 and up I- 320. They had in trunk offset superimposed engines. The swept-back wings were taken over by the service are already in successful MiG- 15, but had to be extended due to the higher empty weight by 100 per cent to four meters and increased in depth. The first prototype I- 320 (R- 1) had RD- 45F engines and a radar Korschun and was flown for the first time from AA Wernikow on 16 April 1949 and tested by him together with YES Antipov until 1950. In 1950, the following second prototype I- 320 ( R-2) was slightly more powerful engines WK -1 and a higher canopy to improve all-round visibility, as well as the cabin was set higher. The tests with this airplane showed at high speeds flutter on the wings that made a limitation of the maximum necessary in order not to destroy the wings. For this reason, I- 320 ( R -3) enhances the arrow faces the third and final prototype, so the speed to 1100 km / h could be increased. However, since the dangerous wing flutter could not be turned off completely even here, the experiments were abandoned with this guy, especially since the above specification was added to the point greater range, the I- 320 but could not fulfill. In the end, none of the three hunters was taken into production, as the now developed Yak- 25 Yakovlev OKB from met these criteria and entered series production.
