Mikun

Mikun (Russian Микунь ) is a city in the northwestern Russian republic of Komi with 10,730 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the foothills of Nordurals about 100 km north of the capital of Republic of Syktyvkar, a few kilometers north of the Vychegda, a right tributary of the Northern Dvina.

Mikun Rajon located in Ust- Wymski.

The city is situated on the Pechora Railway Konosha - Kotlas - Vorkuta ( 1313 line kilometers from Moscow). Here branch branch lines into the Republic capital Syktyvkar and in the about 175 km north- westerly places Wend Inga and Koslan.

History

Mikun was created in 1937 during the construction of the railway line Syktyvkar Koslan in place of their planned intersection with the Pechora Railroad. A village of the same name ( a popular pet form of the name Nikolai ) existed in the area previously.

In the village and its surroundings in 1937 several Gulag camps were still being built.

In 1959 the site of a town.
