Mimar Kemaleddin Bey

Mimar Kemaleddin ( Mahmud Kemaleddin ) (* 1870 in the district of the county Acıbadem Kadıköy in İstanbul, † July 12, 1927 in the district of Ulus in Ankara ) was a major architect during the last phase of the Ottoman Empire and the beginnings of the Republic of Turkey. He is considered the greatest architect of the Birinci Ulusal Mimarlık Akimi ( First National Architectural Movement ), which is somewhere between the years 1908 and 1927.

Life

His family moved to Crete, because his father, who was a naval officer, was assigned an office on the island. During his stay in Girit Kemaleddin learned French and Arabic. 1875 began his primary school education at the Aga İbrahim İbtidai Mektebi in İstanbul and in 1881 his secondary school education in Girit. Even a year later, he and his family back to İstanbul. After his high school graduation, he attended the School of Engineering ( Mühendishane -i Berri Humayün ), from which he graduated in 1891 as valedictorian. The student Kemaleddin fell during his school days in the German architects and professors August Jachmund, which then made ​​him his assistant. He held this position four years until he opened his own architectural office. Kemaleddin was incidentally also a pupil of the Austrian engineer Philipp Forchheimer and the German architect Kos. On January 8, 1895 sent him to Sultan Abdulhamid II for two years at the Technical University in Berlin. Thereafter he remained two years in Berlin to work in various architectural firms. August Jachmund was supported by the German government commissioned the Ottoman architecture to investigate, at the same time transferred Sultan Abdulhamid II him the order to head Sirkeci Station to design the terminus of the Orient Express. During Mimar Kemaleddin on July 12, 1927 inspected the construction site of the Ankara Palas hotel, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, in consequence of which he died as a result of arterial hypertension. Kemaleddins grave is located at the Beyazit Mosque Cemetery in İstanbul.
