Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party

The Minnesota Democratic - Farmer-Labor Party (DFL ) (Democratic Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota ) is a political party in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It was formed in 1944 from the merger of the Minnesota Democratic Party and the Farmer-Labor Party and the National Democratic Party connected. In common parlance, the term " DFLer " became a synonym for a Democrat - regardless of affiliation to the DFL.

History

The DFL was founded on April 15, 1944 under the leadership of Hubert H. Humphrey from the merger of the Minnesota Democratic Party and, especially in the 1930s very successful Farmer-Labor Party. It is an independent federal party, but connected at the national level of the Democratic Party.

In 1954, with Orville Freeman for the first time a member of the DFL governor of Minnesota. Hubert H. Humphrey presented the 1968 presidential candidate for the DFL. When he was eight years previously failed in the primaries against John F. Kennedy in 1964 and became vice president under Lyndon B. Johnson, Humphrey lost in the presidential election on November 6, 1968 just against the Republican Richard Nixon. With Walter Mondale, the DFL presented 1977-1981 under Jimmy Carter a second time the U.S. Vice President. 1984 was also Mondale Democratic presidential candidate, but he clearly lost against incumbent Reagan.

Organizational structure

The DFL is divided into four levels of detail:

  • District level ( Precinct Unit)
  • County Unit ( Senate Districts)
  • Congressional District
  • State level

The district level is the lowest level and can be found within each town or city of Minnesota. Here delegates are elected for County Units. These are classified according to the different geographical counties. Exceptions are nine counties in the metropolitan area of the Twin Cities: here they are divided into the different senatorial districts. The Congressional District represents the third stage dar. This is divided into eight electoral districts of the elections to the U.S. House of Representatives. Main task is to coordinate the activities of the individual County units and support their candidates in elections.

The State DFL Party is the ultimate party structure within Minnesota. Every two years, the Congress with around 1,200 delegates from all over Minnesota instead. The DFL is represented by six members of the Democratic National Committee.
