MINUGUA

The United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (Spanish Misión de Verificación de las Nacionas Unidas en Guatemala, MINUGUA ) based on UN Security Council Resolution 1094 of 20 January 1997 and was a peace mission, which took place from September 1997 to January in Guatemala.

The aim of the mandate was to review the Agreement signed in Oslo on 4 December 1996 ceasefire agreement between the Government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca ( URNG ). The agreement of Oslo (Oslo Agreement, S/1996/1045 ) included the official control over the cessation of hostilities, the cleanup of the armed forces and the disarmament and demobilization of URNG guerrillas in the designated Entwaffnungsstellen.

The headquarters was located in Guatemala City. Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of Mission, Jean Arnault of France. He was supported by the Spanish Brigadier General Jose B. Rodriguez Rodriguez as head of about 150 men full force of military observers, accompanied by medical personnel.

MINUGUA was supported by Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, Germany, Canada, Norway, Austria, Russia, Sweden, Singapore, Spain, Ukraine, Uruguay, USA and Venezuela.
