Mircea Geoană

Mircea Geoană (* July 14, 1958 in Bucharest ) is a politician in Romania and was foreign minister until 2004. He is considered a skilled diplomat and successfully completed the end of 2004 the EU accession negotiations.

Life

Geoană studied law in Bucharest and Paris. Shortly after the fall of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, he joined the Foreign Service, spokesman of the Ministry and in 1996 was sent as the youngest ambassador of his country in the United States. In these contacts his support of the Iraq invasion in 2003 goes back.

In December 2000 Geoană Romania became Foreign Minister and led in this capacity in 2001 to chair the OSCE. He directed the attention of his class colleagues beyond the Balkans to the Caucasus and Central Asia. In a 2004 interview he said FAZ for a stronger and more " ambitious global Europe"; that's what it was worthwhile to make as much of national sovereignty to the EU.

In the local elections in June 2004, he was a social democratic leading candidate for Bucharest, but received only 29.7 percent of the vote. The incumbent mayor Traian Băsescu (Alliance for Justice and Truth) was re-elected with 54.9 percent. Before the presidential elections in late 2004, the political " protégé " of Ion Iliescu was named as presumptive successor of Prime Minister Adrian Năstase.

Since April 21, 2005 Geoană was the chairman of the Social Democratic Party PSD. In the parliamentary elections in 2008, he joined as a top candidate of his party and reached with her the most votes. On 19 December 2008 he was elected President of the Romanian Senate.

The end of 2009 Geoană was a candidate of the PSD in the presidential election. He won the first ballot, 31 % of the votes, thus reaching the ballot, in which he very narrowly lost on December 6 against incumbent Traian Basescu. A few months later - on 21 February 2010 - he lost a crucial vote in the PSD party leader Victor Ponta on.

As a result Geoană came with Ponta repeated in dispute. Ponta initiated on 13 December 2010 that Geoană is ruled out for six months initially from the PSD.
