Miriam Rothschild

Dame Miriam Louisa Rothschild DBE (* August 5, 1908 in Ashton Wold, Oundle, Northamptonshire, † January 20, 2005 ibid ) was a highly esteemed British biologist, marine biologist and zoologist.

Life and work

Rothschild, the eldest daughter of the left-liberal bankers and conservationist Nathaniel Charles Rothschild was (* May 9, 1877, † October 12, 1923 by suicide ) and Rozsika Noble of Wertheimstein (* October 15, 1870 in Oradea, Romania, † June 30, 1940 ), and niece of Lionel Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild. Her parents had three more children:

  • Elisabeth Charlotte Rothschild ( * November 5, 1909, † 1988), called " Liberty"
  • Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild ( * October 31, 1910, † 20 March 1990); 3rd Baron Rothschild, called " Victor"
  • Kathleen Annie Pannonia Rothschild ( born December 10, 1913 † 1988), married to Baron Adolphe de Jules Koenig Warter ( 1904-1995 ) - exile U.S.; called " Nica " (later Baroness Nica de Koenigswarter ), a bebop jazz enthusiast and patroness of Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker

Miriam Louisa Rothschild not go to school, but was taught by her parents. She also had no university degree, but was awarded several honorary doctorates anyway. It was regarded as an outstanding scientist in the field of flea research, was already known her father for, and was a member of the Royal Society. Among many awards, she honored Elizabeth II with Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

As a child Rothschild became interested in butterflies and ladybugs, later came her love in addition to the fleas, which earned her the name " Mistress of fleas ." She kept the fleas in her bedroom to in plastic bags.

Miriam Rothschild was married to George Henry Lane ( born 1915 ) and mother of four children.

  • Charles Daniel Lane ( born 1948 ) married to Carmen Wheatley
  • Charlotte Theresa Lane ( born 1951 ) married to James Grant

In addition to her profession, she was a farmer and squire. She has held numerous positions in the British scientific societies and museums. She has published many books and over 300 scientific articles. Your six-volume catalog about fleas dedicated to her father, Charles, and her uncle Lionel Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild.

Your laboratory financed by Rothschild returns on their farm. She received gold medals for their fruit plantations, were known their quality of gooseberry plantings.
