Mishmar HaEmek

HaEmek Mishmar (Hebrew מִשְׁמַר הָעֵמֶק, literally Guardian of the Valley ) is a kibbutz in northern Israel. As it is situated in the Jezreel Valley, it falls under the jurisdiction of Megiddo Regional Council -. 2006, it had 964 inhabitants.

History

In autumn 1942 it was used by the British Army as a training camp. Against the backdrop of British fears of a further advance of Axis 160 members of the Haganah were trained in sabotage and remote detonators. Several tons of explosives were hidden in the terrain around Mishmar haEmek the event of a German occupation. In May 1944, found in the forests Mishmar haEmeks the first meeting of Palmachs, the standing army, the Haganah, instead.

On April 4, 1948, became the target of an attack by the Arab Liberation Army. This was cut off by a brigade of the Palmach. In the following days, until 15 April 1948, inhabited by Palestinians villages were razed to the ground in the area of Mishmar HaEmek and expelled the inhabitants.

Economy

The economy of the kibbutz is based mainly on a plastic factory in the kibbutz with several additional offices in Israel. The kibbutz also raises chickens and has over 7000 dunams of cultivable land. An information technology company from Mishmar haEmek operates the database system of the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem.
