Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo

Establishment and terms of reference

The Order was founded by Blessed Giovanni Battista Scalabrini on November 28, 1887 in Piacenza. His job was taking care of the Italians who emigrated to America in pastoral and charitable ways. From 1940, this concern was also directed to the emigrant Italians in Europe.

1969 issued by the Holy See to the Order approval, also to take care of all migrants in the world. Since then, the brothers and priests of the Order not only of Italian origin. New confreres come from Brazil, the Philippines, Colombia, Mexico, Haiti, and also from Germany. In collaboration with the local Church, the Order attempts to perform a religious, moral and pastoral care of migrants. In this area, evangelization and a strengthening of faith has its priority. In the poorer countries of reception centers for migrants and refugees are organized. Main tasks are also the awareness of the local church and the citizens on the issues of migration and the pastoral vocations of priests and lay people.

Countries in which the Order is active are: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Brazil, Paraguay, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Italy, UK, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, Haiti, Mexico, Guatemala and south Africa. The Congregation works in parishes, missions "cum cura animarum ", schools, orphanages, broadcasters and study centers, in child and youth centers as well as in hospitals, nursing homes and in refugee camps. It has its own seminaries and formation houses.
