Missionary Order of Mariannhill

The Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill (Latin: Congregation Missionarium de Mariannhill; religious symbol: CMM), colloquially Mariannhill Missionaries, is a Roman Catholic religious men, who in the African mission and in development aid is mainly active.

Origin

The Mariannhill Monastery is a former Trappist monastery and now the headquarters of the Missionaries of Mariannhill near Durban in South Africa. The Trappist monastery was a convent of Mariannhill ( Maria- Anna Hill ) near the port city of Durban founded in 1882 by Abbot Francis Pfanner. Separated in 1909 Pope Pius X, the monastery of the Order of Trappist Association and gave way to the founding of the Missionaries of Mariannhill.

Since its founding in Europe tended brothers of the community in touch with friends and supporters of the missionary work. So two representations could soon be built in Wuerzburg and Cologne. In 1911, the first formation houses were built for the community in Europe. Especially for the brothers training opened the mission house of St. Joseph in Reimlingen 1920.

Institutions and monasteries

Pius seminar in Würzburg

1927 could be started in Würzburg, the construction of a seminary for the community. The anti-clerical policies of National Socialism and the consequences of World War II inhibited the development of the Congregation. But after the war was to rebuild the congregation again take root.

The Pius Seminary in Würzburg was inaugurated in 1929 as a seminary for the community. In the interim, from here the religious students from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and the United States to study theology at the Julius- Maximilians- University of. Today the house is the seat of priestly formation for the German province. The missionaries who work overseas, maintain contact with the German headquarters of the Congregation.

The Missionaries of Mariannhill who live here, work, inter alia, as a pastor, hospital chaplain, retreat leader, leaders of prayer circles and as Beichtseelsorger. Even the novitiate ( training for the young missionaries from Germany and Poland) is housed in the house for several years.

The striking tower of Pius Seminary houses a museum gives an insight into the work of the Missionaries of Mariannhill. In addition, are housed in the Pius Seminar:

Mission House in Reimlingen

The mission house of St. Joseph in Reimlingen, near Nordlingen, was built in 1920. The task was always the recruitment and training of brothers. The brothers were trained as carpenters, shoemakers, locksmiths, tailors, gardeners, printers, typesetters, bookbinders, bakers and farmers in the monastery's farms and workshops for the mission and the homeland. There are also in the mission house in its third generation with brother Wolfgang Hainz a naturopath. Since 1980, the Mission House is also home to a nursing home for dependent members of the Order. Monastery Mönchsdeggingen

In 1951 the monastery Mönchsdeggingen of Nördlingen was acquired as a novitiate for the future priests. Here also the Generalate was temporarily housed, which is based in Rome since 1970.

High School in Maria Veen

1952 a former Trappist monastery in Maria Veen ( Reken ) was acquired in Münster and expanded into a school. Here they wanted to open a school. This plan they put six years later and were able to welcome the first students. In the meantime, visit some 900 girls and boys high school of the Missionaries of Mariannhill. School center lock Riedegg

1936 bought the Missionaries of Mariannhill Castle Riedegg at Gallneukirchen in Upper Austria. The missionaries built in Riedegg a school center including gymnasium and an African Missionary Museum. The Polytechnic School Gallneukirchens is housed in the castle.
