Mixed train

As Mixed train trains are referred to in the railways, which also carry passenger cars and freight cars, so are not pure travel or freight trains.

Other common names for a Joint train are:

  • Freight train with passenger
  • Passenger train with carriage of goods

Freight train with passenger

As a freight train carrying passengers ( GmP ) a freight train is called, the mitführte one or more passenger cars to transport passengers in addition to freight cars. Reasons for this earlier on branch lines not rare type of railway operations management were:

  • Small number of travelers who do not justify the implementation of special trains.
  • Lack of vehicles and / or personnel to perform freight and passenger trains separately.
  • Strong assignment of the route, so that freight and passenger transport must be united.

The cars were either in the middle or at the end of the train set to the traveler to avoid direct contact with the locomotive. In the heating season, the cars had to walk directly behind the locomotive, as freight cars usually do not have heating. Disadvantage for the travelers was the low travel speed of a GmP, who often had longer stays on intermediate stations for depositing and picking up the freight cars. This was also one of the main reasons for the disappearance of this type of train.

GmP there was at the German Federal Railways ÖBB and sporadically until the 1980s. Today they are no longer to be found in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Your implementation would also contradict the common today in most railway companies separation into various subsidiaries for passenger and freight transport. In parts of India, Asia and Africa, however, such transfers are less frequented roads still common. In North America drove on most side roads so-called "mixed trains". These were goods trains running normally with a combined passenger, mail and baggage cars, rarely also with several passenger cars. This type of train disappeared with the setting of the passenger traffic on the secondary roads.

Passenger train with carriage of goods

The counterpart to GmP was the passenger train with goods ( PmG ).

On State Railways there was this type of train occasionally last until early / mid 1990s at Deutsche Reichsbahn (see for example: Lößnitzgrundbahn ). While the rear one or more freight cars were appended to the passenger. A maneuvering on intermediate stations was no longer held in the end of the PmG.

On private railways and in other countries operate even today few PmG, eg with the Rhaetian Railway in the Grisons. To secure these trains long term, the new Allegra railcar this web were designed for a trailer load of 160 tons on the up to 70 ‰ steep Bernina Railway.
