Rhaetian Railway ABe 8/12

The RhB ABe 8/12 is a three part electric train set, from which the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) has ordered a total of 15 pieces from Stadler Rail. The trainsets are used by the RhB since 2010 scheduled routes. The first vehicle was delivered on 13 October 2009 Country quart and then subjected to various tests. The trains are called, like other productions Stadler FLIRT, or STAR SPARROW as Allegra, which corresponds to a Romansh greeting formula.

Requirements

The trainsets are designed for use on the hilly routes most of the RhB, which are

  • The Bernina Railway St. Moritz- Tirano ( maximum gradient 70 ‰, DC operation )
  • The Arosa train Chur- Arosa ( maximum gradient 60 ‰, AC operation )
  • The railroad land quart Davos Platz ( maximum gradient 45 ‰, AC operation )

Since the Bernina Railway are at their peak traffic during the summer, the other two routes in the winter, the trains for all three routes uniformly in a two -phase version (11 kV, 16 2/ 3 Hz AC and 1 kV DC ) were built. This allowed the construction of a large single Series and gives maximum flexibility in operation.

On the Bernina Railway, the trainsets are from 2011, the main means of traction and pulling regional trains, consisting only of the panoramic cars Bernina Express and freight trains. On the Arosa train to Davos and most of the trains is covered with Allegra. After Arosa they are used in the less busy times alone. Trains country quart Davos operate after a stay of a little more than half an hour further to Filisur. The Allegra ride alone.

From the requirements there is a need to be able to carry a high towing capacity. This also explains the railcars for a relatively high continuous output of 2.3 MW. The most powerful locomotive RhB Ge 4 /4 III has a continuous output of 2.4 MW. The starting tractive effort of 280 kN with Allegra is, thanks to the distribution of drive power to eight axes, as much as 30 % higher than that of Ge 4 /4 III. This is necessary for hauling heavy trains on the ramps of the Bernina Railway and the Arosa train. After the commissioning of Allegra's the maximum Zughakenlast was raised on the Bernina line for this unit trains of 140 to 160 tons. Each trainset cost around CHF 10 million.

Construction

The unpowered center car is fitted with a low entry-level, which ensures people with reduced mobility barrier-free access to public transport. Behind the two cabs a first- class compartment with 12 seats is available in each case. The intermediate wall to the cab is glazed and offers passengers a look over the shoulder of the center of the cab sitting locomotive driver on the track.

The vehicle has a total of 24 seats in 1st class and 76 seats in 2nd class, in addition there are 14 folding seats and garaging for two wheelchairs. The disabled toilet is located in the middle car. This has a low floor area, the Former states have a sliding step, which will extend automatically while opening the doors. The compartments and cabs are air-conditioned.

At the end cars ever sits a pantograph with three slip strips for DC, on the intermediate car for an alternating current. In case of emergency and during shunting but each pantograph can be used on both networks. All three pantographs are connected to each other via a high- voltage roof line; the current system is " a master switch " of the engine driver detected independently in command of the vehicle.

The trains are pendelzugfähig, so they can be controlled by a control car. Of these, is currently (2012 ) but not yet exercised. With the existing drive trains of the RhB however, they are control side can not be combined.

Speed record on meter gauge

On the occasion of the farewell ride for the outgoing Director 145 km / h was reached on 20 December 2010 with the Allegra 3502 in Vereinatunnel. Previously on the Inbetriebsetzungsfahrten on 5 December 2009 139 km / h was achieved. The previous record for meter-gauge trains of 134 km / h was erected, also a multiple unit built by Stadler only in June 2009 at the Regional Bern-Solothurn (RBS ) with a RABe 4/12 " NExT ". In the RhB 110 km / h were recorded as the maximum so far.

Area of application

Provided the trainsets for the following main areas of application (although they do on the other main line can be used if necessary).

  • Bernina Express ( Chur- Tirano)
  • Bernina Railway
  • Chur- Arosa line
  • Railway Davos - Filisur
  • Railway land quart Davos Platz

For the Chur urban transport ( Chur - Thusis or Schiers - Country Quart - Chur - Rhazuns ) followed in 2011 a related Triebzugserie: The Abe 4 /16, which are designed only for the AC voltage of the main network.

Name

On 1 May 2010, the first four trainsets were baptized. As the name of the new trainsets name used by famous persons in the Grisons.
