Rhaetian Railway Be 4/4

The six EMUs Series Be 4/4 with numbers 511-516 are used in the Rhaetian Railway ( RhB) in the regional transport used.

History

The RhB saw in the 1960s, with steadily increasing passenger numbers and increasing demands faced by the rolling stock. Especially the claims of passengers on the rolling stock had changed. This prompted the RhB for detailed studies on what should be purchased for new rolling stock for. This showed among other things that need for a contemporary vehicle concept in the suburbs to Chur was. Thus, the RhB end October 1968 decided to appoint four modern three-piece push-pull trains. These should be used in addition to the suburban trains to Chur for sports.

In 1971, the company delivered FFA ( car bodies ), SIG (bogies ) and SAAS ( electrical equipment), the first four railcars ( numbers 511-14 ) to the RhB, at the time the first standard production locomotives of Switzerland with continuous electronic power control ( phase control using thyristors ). At the same time introduced the RhB the matching intermediate coaches B 2411-14 and 1711-14 ABDT control cars in service, so that four three-piece commuter trains could be formed. In contrast to the rest of the RhB - rolling the loading 4/4-Pendelzüge have automatic couplers and air brakes; a mixed use with other vehicles is not possible. 1979 procured the RhB two virtually identical, trains with the numbers ending in 15 and 16, 1988 After four additional intermediate coaches (B 2417-20 ) were added, four -car trains could pass. From 1994, the vehicles went through an extensive refit program, wherein the electrical equipment with the exception of the traction motors was completely renewed.

Technical

The railcars are designed as welded steel construction. These had to be regarded as static redesign, why was carried out on the car body shell loading tests with corresponding measurements. The corresponding blocks have fully welded light-alloy car bodies in contrast. The entire train composition was designed from the outset to be operated einmännig. That's why all the doors are equipped with a pneumatic door closure, which can be operated from the driver's cab ( face-selective door release). The doors have push-button pre-selection buttons next to the doors. Also they have a Türschliessautomatik that the doors automatically closes during startup and keeps it closed while driving. The interior design was also made sure that there is enough support rods are available, as in the planned use had to be reckoned with standing passengers well. All axes are disc brakes. The trucks are equipped with Seitenanlenker and do not pivot. The railcar has two -axle trucks with Einzelachsantrieb, the drive configuration is accordingly Bo'Bo '. The drive motors are in opposite directions, with correspondingly adapted gears arranged. This - although more expensive - arrangement has advantages in the smooth running of the bogie. The built-in multi- controller is designed for the operation of up to three units. To ensure a fast connection and disconnection, automatic GF couplings were incorporated into the design for suburban railways ( GER ) where, in addition to the mechanical connection at the same time the electrical and pneumatic lines are coupled.

The vehicles are equipped with an acceleration of 0.8 m / s ². The permitted top speed is 90 km / h The electric brake can also be a delay of 0.8 m / s ² brake the train up to a speed of 20 km / hr. Among them, the electro-pneumatic brake switches to automatically to compensate for the decreasing of the electrical brake power brake. The electric brake is also designed for the long-term stress that occurs in an application as inertia brake with a fully loaded train in a 45 ‰ gradient (eg Davos - Kublis ). The hourly capacity is 780 kW at 45 km / h

Operating

The railcar itself offers 40 seats in 2nd class. The appointed train with a B- intermediate cars and the cab control car has a total of 12 seats 1st class, 136 2nd class seats and additional 22 folding seats.

Main application of the suburb pendulum was and is the regional traffic in the Chur. Inserts on the Davos - Filisur and in the Upper Engadine were short episodes.

In the late evening of September 11, 2011 derailed on the Carrera creek Bridge ( between Reichenau and Ilanz ) as a result of a debris cone of the control car and the following car of a train. In the accident three people were slightly injured, the vehicle was great damage to property.

Despite the fact that the Board be 4/4 replaced by the new ABe 4 /16, the damaged control car ABDT was set up in the main workshops in the country again Quart 1716. These parts of the middle car B were used in 2415, which was also classified in Unfallzug. This served as a source of spare parts and was canceled in May 2012.
