History and Development

1850-1895

The plans for the Churchill station began around 1850. After hard debate, the station was then built outside the city at its present location. The opening was followed on 30 June 1858. At that time, the station was designed as a terminal station of the route Rheineck -Chur. The operator of the station at that time were the United Swiss Railways. Being only a temporary wooden goods shed was built as a reception building for the station. But already in 1860 was the apparent today in a changed state reception building. However, it was in 1876 moved to a new location on the belt road, where it is still located today. Because of the ever increasing tourism you wanted a new station building, which was completed on 1 November 1878. This building still exists today, but had to endure over the years several reconstructions.

1896-1985

In 1896 we opened the narrow-gauge railway land quart Thusis the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). Because of a Federal Council resolved the RhB was forced to abandon its own train station and instead incorporate into the station of the United Swiss Railways. In 1903, the Albula Line was opened, which called for a further expansion of the station. In 1914, the station had also the additional traffic the newly opened Chur- Arosa line tackle. Due to sharply increased traffic of the railway station in the year 1926-1928 has been completely remodeled. As part of this restructuring we increased the number of tracks, built new bridges and simplified the arrangement of the tracks. The buildings from earlier times have been renovated and new buildings erected.

1985 to today

Today the station is located in Chur and forms the transition between the old and the new town. The most striking building of the station is the roof, completed in 1993 with the post bus station. In 1986, the architect Richard Brosi and Robert Obrist won the first prize in a competition for the design of the station. The idea was to give rise to an airy concourse.

1988 voted the Chur voters to the project of an underground station for the Arosa train and a nearly three -kilometer mountain center tunnel between the Chur train station and Sassal a large majority. As a result of subsequent deletion of initially promised federal funding had to the project, which in the course of the planned conversion of the Arosa train on 11kV AC should be realized, however, be abandoned a few years later. The new station facility would have designed a three-pronged and with direct connection to the main line of RhB, the third track - off the beaten track - in particular the baggage and cargo handling had served during peak usage.

The comprehensive redevelopment of the station began in 2000. The complete redesign of the station is a joint project of the SBB, the RhB and the city of Chur. The new station underpass opened in 2003 and has been extended to 2006 towards the south. The station platforms were raised to the Switzerland's usual height of 55 cm and renewed the rooftops. When connecting the new passenger underpass, a new shopping mall opened in the south. The old station building, known as the Belle Époque, was extensively renovated and completed in 2007. Between the tracks of the SBB and the tracks of the RhB Chur -Arosa line, which were moved from the center of the station square directly to the rebuilt station building, there is a new business and commercial building.

The new terminal of urban bus Churchill was also moved closer to the train station and now has a direct connection to the underground shopping arcade. The railway station square was extensively redesigned and completed in 2008.
