The Thalwil railway station is a rail transport hub in Thalwil in the Swiss canton of Zurich. It is operated by the SBB and is served by those with both long-distance trains to Zurich, Lucerne and Graubunden, as well as a total of four - day and one night line of the S -Bahn Zurich.

Location and architecture

The station was opened by the Northeastern Railway in connection with the construction of the left-bank Zürichseebahn on 20 September 1875. During the construction of the railway line Thalwil - Arth -Goldau the station was expanded in 1897 to a branch station.

The station building was rebuilt in 1963 according to the plans of Max Vogt. While the ground floor houses the offices are located upstairs two official residences. These service apartments had to be borne in mind that the sun and the traffic noise from the same side come. Therefore, each apartment has an L-shape arranged around a private roof terrace. The roof terraces were built with a concrete frame into the building, and serve as a buffer zone against the railway noise.

The goods shed was replaced in 1973 by a new building according to the plans of Max Vogt. This originally possessed upstairs an outside cladding vorgerostetem COR- TEN steel. This panel was later replaced by one made of wood.

As it is situated on a hillside, has both under-and overpasses the station. He has a side and two central platforms.

Development and integration of rail transport

In the driveway from Chur / train there is a Überwerfung. The line of train descends from the direction Oberrieden village on level of Zürichseebahn, while the line of brick bridge does not lose levels. Outside the station, the Seebahn is divided, the lane direction Zurich passes under the line of train and opens from the left in this, while the right hand lane of Zurich opens. Thanks to this Überwerfung can without crossing the seaward central platform of trains from Zurich, the mountain side are served by trains to Zurich. At the exit direction Zurich is one of the major Swiss bottlenecks: the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel - although he had greatly relieved the sea line and enables it to other S- Bahn line - branches from the left hand side. However, the long-distance trains from Zurich to cross first nor the sea line. In addition, the short section of the tunnel junction to the train station is two instead of four lanes.

Plant

The station comprises a total of 8 through tracks, the track is one embedded in the main platform to platform 2. Further still exist some stumps and sidings. Platforms include in addition to the track 2 is still connected to the two central platforms tracks 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 on the middle platform 5/6 the trains in direction Zurich, on the middle platform 3/4 in the opposite direction.
