Mohammed Waheed Hassan

Mohammed Waheed Hassan ( Dhivehi: . ޑ ރ މ ު ހ ަ އ ް މ ަ ދ ު ވ ަ ހ ީ ދ ު ޙ ަ ސ ަ ނ ް މ ަ ނ ި ކ ު, born January 3, 1953 in Malé ), a member of the political party Gaumee Itthihaad a Maldivian politician and served between February 7, 2012 to November 17, 2013 President of the Maldives.

Life

Hassan studied at the American University of Beirut and at Stanford University International Affairs and Business. He has served as Deputy Director of the Organization UN Development Group Office ( UNDGO ) at the United Nations headquarters in New York City before he returned to the Maldives in 2005. From 2008 to 2011 was vice president under Hassan Mohamed Nasheed. Since February 7, 2012, as the successor of Hassan Nasheed President of the Maldives.

At the end of his term, the first round of the presidential election in 2013 was declared by the Supreme Court invalidated, preventing the runoff as the second round of voting by the police. The opposition candidate Mohamed Nasheed called dauraufhin his resignation. On September 7, 2013 elections took place, won by the challenger Abdulla Yameen.
