Molality#Osmolality

The osmolality is a special case of the molality:

With

  • - The number of particles of osmotically active substances (for example ions, glucose, proteins)
  • - Mass of the solvent, usually water ( applies to small quantities of the substance in question, which is the case in general ).

The osmolality is indicated in the unit osmol / kg. Determining in body fluids, the distribution of water between the different cell areas. Water diffuses out of regions of low osmolality in regions higher osmolality until equilibrium is reached. For the determination of urine, serum, and plasma can be used.

On the other hand, the osmolarity refers to the volume of the solvent.
