Monastery of Armash

The Monastery of Armasch (Armenian Արմաշի վանք ) was an Armenian Apostolic monastery near Nicomedia (now Izmit in Turkey). It was built in 1611 and existed until the genocide of the Armenians in 1915 / 17th

A theological seminary, which was the only Armenian Seminary in western Anatolia, was operated next to the monastery. It was founded on the initiative of Patriarch Horen I. Achekian (1888-1894) and led, among other things of the deans Malachia Ormanian, later Patriarch of Constantinople Opel and Yeghische Tourian, later Patriarch of Jerusalem. The seminar formed until its closure in 1916 ( of which 36 Vartabeds ) of approximately 300 students. Among all secondary schools in the country, the seminar of Armasch was regarded as the most prominent Armenian institution in the Ottoman Empire.
