Monnaie de Paris

The Monnaie de Paris is the French national mint.

It is organized since 2007 in law as so-called EPIC ( établissement public à caractère industriel et commerciel ), comparable to a German public-law institution, and is distributed on the main site (Hôtel de la Monnaie, completed 1775) at the Quai de Conti in Paris and since 1973, a second location in Pessac in the Gironde. The actual production of the coins in Pessac happens, where, since 1998, the euro is embossed.

In addition to the head office is located in the Hôtel de la Monnaie also an extensive numismatic collection, the Musée de la Monnaie de Paris.

In addition to the monopolized functions of the coinage of the French coins, the Monnaie de Paris is also commercial activities in competition with private companies in the following areas:

  • Production and sale of foreign coin, collector coins and medals;
  • Production of works of art and jewelery under the registered trademark " Monnaie de Paris ";
  • Rental of rooms for private events;
  • Production of security features to protect against counterfeiting.

History

Already Charles the Bald centralized in the year 864, the French coinage at the royal court in Paris.

In 1358 the force for more than four centuries of the Mint in structure was constructed that divided the other hand, in a coinage regulating management on the one hand and in state-controlled garages.

Founded in 1879, the law stipulates that only the French State holds the right to mint coins themselves.

Criticism of coins collectors

Since the introduction of the euro, the Monnaie de Paris stands out with a lot of new issues of collector coins. These collector coins have sometimes low, " crooked " nominal (¼ €, 1,5 € ) and shapes ( for example, a rectangular shape ), but then often only issued for a multiple of the nominal value. In addition, the run lengths are greatly varied and often issued on the same topic more embossed in different metals collector coins. For these reasons, the performances of the French collecting coins very different and the total amount of expenditure without literature are difficult manageable. Some of these collector coins are thus difficult to relate that they were sometimes not available in France.
