Mono Department

Mono is a department of Benin, with its capital Lokossa.

Geography

The Department is located in the southwest of the country, bordered to the north by the Department Couffo, to the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Togo and on the east by the department of Atlantique.

Population

At the last census in 2002 counted 360 037 inhabitants the department.

Ethnic groups

The largest peoples are the Sahoue with 39.9 % and 21.3% Kotafon population.

Religions

The largest single religion is voodoo cult with (official) 40.5%, followers of the total population. It, follows Christianity with 33.6 % ( including 61 % Catholic and 28 % supporters African Independent Churches ). Islam is represented with a share of 1.3 %.

History

In 1999 the northern part was separated as Department Couffo.
