The Mont Poupet is a 851 meter high mountain in the Jura in France.

Location

The Mont Poupet is located north of Salins- les- Bains and belongs to the municipality of Saint - Thiébaud in the northwest of the Jura. It forms the southeastern tip of running from northeast to southwest ridge and overlooks the valley of the Furieuse.

History

The wide view over the valley and the region has been estimated in the Middle Ages. In the 13th century a castle was built on the mountain, which belonged to the lords of Montmahoux. Over time, a settlement near the castle was built. Settlement and castle were in 1479 by troops of King Louis XI. destroyed.

It became famous Mont Poupet by Louis Pasteur, who was trying to prove here that germs do not arise spontaneously and their number in the air decreases with increasing altitude.

Geology

The summit consists predominantly of the typical for the limestone of the Jura mountains on the southern slope of the summit is visible. At the foot of the mountain especially gray marl occurs.

Traffic

About the ridges, the department D273 road from the south runs Coming. The road forks here for D261 in the direction Ivrey and the D102 in the direction of the muon. In the valley around the mountain pass, the D270 and the D492.

Transmission tower

On an approximately 50 m high steel lattice mast at the top there are two amateur radio relays and antennas for mobile telephony.

Sports

The Mont Poupet is primarily used by paragliders and hang-gliders. As on the mountain: the GR 59 runs, the mountain is popular with hikers. In spring, the " Montée du Poupet " takes place annually, a 17.5 km long run of Salins- les- Bains to the summit of the mountain.
