The Mont Puke (also Mont Singavi or, according to Willem Schouten, Mont Schouten called ) is 524 m above sea level, the highest elevation in the French overseas territory Wallis and Futuna.

Location

The Mont Puke is located on the island of Futuna, the peak is located around 1.5 km from the northern coast. Neighboring mountains of Mont Kalufatufatu ( 473 m ) in the west and the Mont Kofua (503 m ) in the west and the Toafa Magalua ( 459 m) in the southeast. Three hundred meters northeast of the main summit is the 502 m high Vorgipfel Matagitoga. The Mont Puke is forested. In east-west direction, a path leads over the summit.

Mythology and History

In Polynesian mythology Futunas Finelasi, daughter of Mago and Tafaleata goddess and protector of the island resided on the summit of Mont Puke, where they had fled to the incestuous relationship with her brother Fakavelikele.

The membership of the Mont Puke was disputed between the kingdoms Alo and Sigave long time. He is surrounded by a wall called Atufatutea, which was built according to tradition, to decide the border dispute in a competition. Those who first managed to build a wall around the summit, which should include the mountain.

The present border between the two kingdoms runs over the Mont Puke.
