Montagu-Pass

Montagu Pass, the Outeniqua Pass

K

The Montagu Pass ( 745 m ) was the first safe pass over the Outeniqua Mountains in South Africa and replaced the dangerous Cradock Pass. It was named after John Montagu Pass.

The management of the construction work ( 1844-1847 ) for the 13 km long pass was taken over by Henry Fancourt White. For cost reasons, the work was carried out with 250 prisoners. Now we just needed hours - compared to days for the trip across the Cradock Pass - to go over the Outeniqua Mountains from George to Oudtshoorn.

The pass should be the main link between the coastal region and the Little Karoo over 100 years and is still often used by tourists because of its spectacular views

In 1972, the passport has been declared a National Monument and is the oldest unchanged Pass in South Africa.
