The Monte Cimone ( 2165 m) is the most famous mountain in the northern Apennines in Emilia -Romagna. He belongs to the municipalities Fiumalbo, SESTOLA, Fanano and Riolunato in the province of Modena. Its shape is a characteristic landscape of the Apennines, the mountain is visible from the provinces of Modena, Reggio Emilia, Parma, Pistoia, Bologna and Ravenna. During the Cold War, the access was forbidden to the summit for military reasons. On the mountain there are facilities of the Italian Meteorological Service.

On a clear day you can see from the summit of the Alps, the Adriatic, the Tyrrhenian Sea, Monte Amiata, Monte Argentario and the islands of Elba, Corsica and Capraia. Hillside is a much visited ski, there are 31 pistes with a total length of more than 50 km ( the longest distance is 3.6 km ) and 26 lifts. The ski season typically lasts from early December to mid-April. A funicular railway connects the Passo del Lupo ( accessible by car ) to the Pian Cavallaro, from which one can reach the top in about an hour. On the northeast slope is the " Lago della Ninfa " ( Nymphensee ). A good starting point to reach the mountain is Sestola (1020 m).
