Monte Viso Tunnel

The Buco di Viso ( fr. Le Pertuis du Viso ) is a connecting France and Italy, about 75 m long tunnel in the Cozie Alps, built 1479-1480. He is thus considered the oldest tunnel in the Alps.

He is, after the south of the ridge, in Monte Viso ( 3841 m), the dominant peak in the area, and runs at a height of 2882 m below the Colle delle Traversette ( 2950 m).

The approximately 3 m wide and 2 m high tunnel Margrave Ludwig II can break through from Saluzzo to facilitate trade on the Via del Sale between Provence and the Po Valley.

This tunnel is also today still passable for hikers, such as on the "Blue Way" Via Alpina or on the route Giro del Monviso that leads around in two days to the striking rock pyramid.
