Monthelon, Saône-et-Loire

Monthelon is a commune with 399 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Saône -et -Loire in the Burgundy region.

Geography

The community Monthelon lies east of the Morvan massif at the Celle, which opens below the village in the Arroux, about six kilometers west of the town of Autun.

Attractions

The Château de Monthelon is classified as a monument historique since November 7, 1927. It goes back to the 15th century and is privately owned. The rectangular building is flanked on the northeast front of two round towers. At the inputs of the coat of arms of Rabutin de Chantal family with the heraldic motto virescit vulnere VIRTUS are ( " the virtue increases through wounds " ) attached as a relief. Circulating gallery of the courtyard dates from the Renaissance period.

A small chapel in the northern part has a clearly visible bell tower. During archaeological excavations near the village including a consecration inscription to the god Amarcolitanus was found.

Personalities

The holy Jane Frances de Chantal (1572-1641), full name Jeanne -Françoise Frémyot, Baronne de Chantal de Rabutin, at times lived in the Château de Monthelon.
