Monticolomys

Monticolomys koopmani is a mouse -like rodent species of the subfamily of Madagascar rats ( Nesomyinae ). The species was discovered only in 1996 and so far only known from five specimens that were found in the central highlands of Madagascar.

Monticolomys koopmani similar to the Madagascar Großfußmäusen with which it is likely to be closely related, but differs by a darker fur and much smaller ears. As this has it enlarged hind legs and a very long tail and is reminiscent of the unrelated gerbils. Their fur is soft and dense, it has a dark gray at the top and dark brown on the bottom. This is the smallest species of Madagascar rats, it reaches a body length 9-10 cm, a tail length of 12 to 14 inches and a weight of 25 to 27 grams.

The five specimens found so far were found in mountain forests in 1600 to 2000 meters above sea level. Out of the Body is concluded that the species is a good climber, otherwise nothing about the way of life known.
